Abstract

This experiment was performed to study the effect of benztropine on the prolactin response induced by haloperidol in rabbits. With administration of normal- saline, haloperidol alone, and haloPeridol with benztropine, each plasma prolactin level was assayed wit the method of. RIA, and compared with each other.
Following results were revealed;
A. The mean baseline plasma prolactin level was measured as 35¡¾13.3ng/ml.
B. The plasma prolactin¢¥ response with administration of normal saline appeared stable throughout the whole experiment.
C. The plasma prolactin level with administration of haloperidol alone, 1.0mg/kg, showed rapid increase immediately, and dropped after 30 minutes.
D. The plasma prolactin level with administration of both haloperidol (0. 5mg/kg, 1.0mg /kg) and benztropine (0. 5mg/kg) revealed no apparent changes, although slightly increased.
E. with combined administration of benztropine to haloperidol, the plasma prolactin level was lower than that of haloperidol alone, while administration of haloperidol alone caused significant increase of plasma prolactin level.
With these results, anticholinergic action of benztropine seemed to have some role in the regulation of prolactin secretion and might influence the effect of antipsychotic. Psychiatric implication was discussed in brief with this connotation.
